In October 2009, scores of people died of cholera in the same region and some have criticised the government, saying it could have done more to prepare for this second outbreak.
The government says the situation is under control.
A toll at the end of July reported 94 deaths from 1,300 cases of cholera. By Monday night, there were 2,078 reported cases in the far north.
Of the 28 districts in the region, 17 have reported cases of cholera. In the north region, there have been a further seven cases reported, but no deaths.
