Police spokesperson Eric Kayiranga said the charges against Major Vital Uwumuremyi, a former commander of the rebel FDLR, implicate Ingabiré, the head of the FDU, the United Democratic Forces.

But the FDU denies the charges.

“They say that she’s in collaboration with the FDLR, but that is not true,” said FDU Secretary General Sylvain Sibomana. “The FDU is a political party that wants to resolve the problems of the country without violence, without the army, without the military.”

Ingabiré has been under house arrest since April this year, when she was accused of denying the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

US lawyer Peter Erlinder was arrested earlier this year, but was not officially charged. Erlinder said his work to defend Ingabiré had incurred the anger of President Paul Kagame's government.

Authorities blocked Ingabiré's attempts to register the FDU and run for the 9 August presidential election which was won by President Paul Kagame.
