Referendum commission in Khartoum cautiously optimistic
The chairman of the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission, Mohamed Ibrahim Khalid, is less upbeat than his colleague George Makuer in Juba, but he remains optimistic that Sunday's poll will go smoothly, especially after President Omar al-Beshir's recent comments that the north will accept an independent south. Before that, he says, a sense of disunity and political confusion was creating security concerns.
