Khartoum denies offering to help south pay debts

media Sudan's Finance Minister Ali Mahmoud Reuters/Mohamed Nureldin Abdallah

The Sudanese government is denying that president Omer al-Beshir has offered to pay the south's foreign debt. Former US president Jimmy Carter has said that Beshir made the offer when the two men met together over the weekend, but the Sudanese presidency claims Beshir simply told Carter that dividing the debt burden would not be of any help to either side because both lack the resources to make the necessary payments.

Hassan Hilal, an economist and former opposition politician says Khartoum cannot even afford to pays its own debt service.
