Up to 15 die in Jos clashes

Clashes between Christians and Muslims have left up to 15 people dead in Jos, in central Nigeria. Police say the death toll is only two, but an emergency services official told AFP his team had found 15 bodies around the city on Sunday.

The official added that several people had been injured by machetes and gunfire, and others had been burnt.

 

Six were killed by security forces and five were killed in religious clashes, Muslim leader Ahmed Garba told AFP. He said 14 people had died in total and three of them were burnt to death.

The clashes followed an attack on Friday on three students at Jos University by Muslims who had come from a nearby village.

Church officials said churches in the area were empty on Sunday morning.

Separately, two members of an Islamist sect and one policeman were killed Borno state, in the north of the country, this weekend.

On Friday, seven people, including Modu Fannami Gubio governorship candidate, were killed in Borno.

Elections for state governors are scheduled for 16 April. The presidential election will take place on 9 April and legislative elections on 2 April.
