Thousands of protesters from both sides were in the square, where opposition demonstrations have taken place for nine days.

Several groups were involved in fist fights, some were throwing stones and others using clubs, according to reporters.

Opposition activists claimed that plain-clothes police, some carrying weapons, led attempts to take over the square.

Following US President Barack Obama and France’s Nicolas Sarkozy, British Prime Minister David Cameron said that change in Egypt must be “rapid and credible and needs to start now”.

The European Union on Wednesday expressed support for the “legitimate aspirations” of the Egyptian people and offered to “step up assistance” to an “orderly transition”.
