France not yet evacuating citizens from Libya

France's junior minister for European affairs said Monday that there was no need to evacuate the 750 French people living in Libya.But the European Union is considering evacuating its citizens, as buildings are reported to have been ransacked in Tripoli.

Junior minister Laurent Wauquiez said Monday that there was no direct risk for French citizens in Libya, and that the focus was on assuring their security.

However, about 30 people who working at the hospital in Benghazi were moved to the capital, Tripoli.

The European Union is considering evacuating its citizens from Libya, according to Spain's Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez, particularly from Benghazi, where demonstrations started last week.

The British energy company BP was getting ready to evacuate some its 140 staff, most of whom are in Tripoli. Abotu 40 are expatriates.

Demonstrations have spread from Benghazi to Tripoli, with violence reported on Monday.

Witnesses reported clashes in Tripoli's downtown Green Square between protesters and Kadhafi supporters.

Others reported that protesters sacked the headquarters of state television overnight and set fire to offices of the People's Committees, which serve as the country’s ministries.

Some 500 Libyans stormed and looted a South Korean construction site near Tripoli capital on Monday, injuring about 15 Bangladeshi and three South Korean workers, according to Seoul's foreign ministry.

Protests continued in Benghazi, and witnesses in Misrata told the AFP news agency that security forces, backed by "African mercenaries" fired on crowds "without discrimination".
