Egypt imposes travel ban on Mubarak

Egypt on Monday imposed a travel ban on ousted President Hosni Mubarak and his family, and froze his assets in the country, according to judicial officials. The decision also applies to his wife Suzanne, his two sons, Ala and Gamal, and their wives.

Mubarak stepped down on 11 February after weeks of protests, handing control over to the army. He is in the Egyptian Red Sea town of Sharm el-Sheikh.

On 21 February, Egypt's prosecutor general Abdel Magid Mahmud requested a freeze on the foreign assets of the former president and his family.

France said last week that it would back the Egyptian request. Switzerland, which froze Mubarak's assets within hours of his resignation, previously said the former president had "tens of millions of francs" in Swiss financial institutions.

Mubarak has not been seen publicly since he stepped down.
