Kadhafi forces battle for control of northern towns

Libyan government forces have recaptured the city of Marsa el Brega, an oil terminal in the east of the country. On Wednesday morning planes attacked Ajdabyah in the east. The government is also trying to regain control of the nearby towns of Gharyan and Sabratha.

In Benghazi, which is under opposition control, the city's interim authorities are recruiting volunteers to fight against government forces.

Government jets bombarded the town of Ajdabyah on Wednesday, where there is a military base and an arms depot, according to Al Jazeera.

Ajdabyah, which is 160 kilometres south of Benghazi, is one of the biggest towns in the east of Libya in the hands of the opposition.

Meanwhile, a petrol tanker exploded Wednesday near the compound of Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi in the capital Tripoli. The cause of the tanker blast was not immediately clear but there appeared to be no casualties.

The tanker overturned and split open near a mosque and a hotel.

Several hundred Kadhafi supporters rallied near the site of the explosion. Many carried portraits of Kadhafi. A few carried Kalashnikov rifles.

Tripoli remains under government control and largely peaceful.

Iran has warned against military intervention to oust Kadhafi.

"They [Western countries]should not try to turn countries into military bases," said Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast. He added that he condemned the violence of Kadhafi’s government against protesters.
