This follows a similar request by Britain on Tuesday, which was approved by the UN steering committee responsible for overseeing UN sanctions against Libya

The unfrozen funds will be used for humanitarian aid and to keep the country running.

Tomorrow, France and Britain will co-host an international conference on the future of Libya after Kadhafi at which the issue of Libya frozen assets will be discussed.

France says it would like the funds to be unblocked by the end of the week
