Scholars in human evolution working in South Africa have published details of the most remarkable discovery of fossils in recent decades. The so-called "Sediba fossils" - the skull and bones of an adult female and a juvenile male who lived almost two million years ago - are cited as a possible "transitional species". Researchers say this could represent a bridge between humanity's tree-dwelling ancestors and our more recent forebears who, like us, walked upright.
