Commonwealth bids for French backing at G20

The head of the Commonwealth met French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris last night. With France holding the presidency of the G20, Kamalesh Sharma was pushing the 54-nation Commonwealth's agenda ahead of next week's G20 finance ministers meeting. The Commonwealth recently observed elections in Zambia and has a team in place for this weekend's elections in Cameroon. But there is criticism of the Commonwealth's approach to holding countries accountable for their human rights record. While countries such as Zimbabwe, a former Commonwealth member, remain outside the reach of the club of mainly former British colonies.
