France and Nigeria join forces to fight terrorism

France and Nigeria are to step up their joint fight against Islamic terrorists in West Africa. The announcement by Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan came at the end of his three-day visit to the French capital which also saw a deal for a 75,450 million euro loan to build a bus network in the capital Lagos.

Jonathan said security experts from the two countries will work together to stop terrorism from spreading throughout the region.

“When Africa is undergoing a crisis, Europe feels the effects,” he explained.

The loan is to help fund the city’s new 330 million urban transport plan co-financed by the World Bank.

Lagos is sub-Saharan Africa’s largest metropolis and the commercial hub of Africa’s oil exporting largest nations, but its public infrastructure is not able to cope with its vast population.

The city has a population of 15 million people, roughly the size of countries like Niger or Mali.

Its current public transport system dates back to the 1980s when the city had eight million inhabitants.

The bus network is expected to be up and running by 2014/2015.
