Need for aid in the Sahel region

Issued on:

Concerns are growing over the humanitarian situation in the Sahel region. Yipènè Djibril Bassolé, the Burkina Faso Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Cooperation, will be attending a meeting in Algeria on the issue later today. The situation has been exacerbated in recent weeks after fighting broke out between rebels and security forces in northern Mali. Tens of thousands of people are now in need of humanitarian assistance after seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. The UN Under Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs, Valerie Amos, spoke to RFI earlier this week about her concerns for the region.
