Call for change to Moroccan rape law

Issued on:

In Morocco, activists are calling for the country's penal code to be revised after a16-year-old-girl - Amina Filali - committed suicide earlier this month after a judge ordered her to marry her rapist. The Moroccan penal code states that a rapist can escape prosecution if he agrees to marry his victim. The tragic incident sparked outrage in Morocco and elsewhere. RFI spoke to Naima Hamoumi, from the Democratic Association for Moroccan Women in Rabat, about why this law has gone unchallenged for so long.
