Egypt's parliament limits military courts' power

Issued on:

Egypt's parliament has approved a measure banning the country's next president from sending civilians to be tried by military tribunals. Activists have campaigned against the practise since Egypt's ruling generals took over from deposed President Hosni Mubarak last year. Thousands of Egyptians citizens are standing trial in a military court or are waiting in jail for a military trial to begin. Human rights lawyer Magda Boutros says the law changes little because the military itself will still have the power to try civilains.
