Meet the woman revolutionizing Tunisian music

Issued on:

Emel Mathlouthi, a young singer-songwriter and guitarist from Tunisia, has been described as a new-look protest singer. For years, her politically free-spirited songs remained underground in her native Tunisia. But the Jasmine Revolution brought her music quite literally into the open air, accompanying Tunisia's fight for freedom. She talks to RFI about bringing a new sound to Tunisian music.
