Mali Islamists cut off thief's hand

Issued on:

An Islamist militia in northern Mali has cut off the hand of a thief in Ansongo. The group which controls the town, the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (Mujoa), says the punishment is "the will of God". The radicals who have taken over northern Mali say they support a strict interpretation of Islamic law despite Mali's long tradition of secularism. Social anthropologist Bruce Whitehouse of Lehigh University says that most Malians do not support a strict interpretation of sharia.
