Time running out to decide fate of disputed oil-producing Abyei region

Issued on:

Sudan and South Sudan have until 5 December, a deadline set by the African Union, to resolve the final status of the flashpoint region of Abyei. The oil-producing territory was to have held a referendum in January 2011 on whether it belonged with the north or South, but disagreement over who could vote stalled the ballot. If the question is not resolved next month, both countries will then be forced to hold put it to a referendum next October. RFI spoke to analyst Abdelbasit Saeed, who has been a consultant on the issue.
