Over the last five years or so the introduction of creative digital tools has led to a boom in graphic art circulating via Facebook, Cybercafés and cellphones. The Sahel Digital Art exhibition has just opened in Paris and is showcasing some of the best modern digital art from the Sahel region and Mali in particular.
The 40 or so digital creations collected in Mali and via the internet show cellphone photography, Facebook profile graphics and viral videos.
Many of the images are inspired by the political creation of a "digital" Azawad, a self-proclaimed Tuareg state unrecognised by the international community but which is thriving on new media.
These young designers of the digital realm are using montage, digital distortion, lens flares and pixelation to express their hopes and fantasies ... often with a very dry sense of humour.
Sahel Digital Art runs through to 14 April 2013 at Le Comptoir General
80, quai de Jemmapes, 75010 Paris
