South African prosecutors to probe Zimbabwe's Zanu-PF for crimes against humanity

Issued on:

South African prosecutors will investigate members of President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF political party for possible crimes against humanity, after allegations of a campaign of mass rapes in Zimbabwe’s last election. The decision marks the first time an African state has used domestic laws to investigate another African country under the principle of “universal jurisdiction.” It’s also the first time that an African court has invoked “universal jurisdiction” in a rape investigation. The move follows a campaign launched by AIDS-Free World, a US-based NGO that documented 84 rape cases. RFI talked to Stephen Lewis, the founder of AIDS-Free World.
