UN debates arms trade treaty restricting weapons sales

Issued on:

The United Nations starts a last-chance bid today to agree on a treaty to regulate the international trade in conventional arms, estimated to be worth 60 billion euros. The 193 UN members will have nine days to hammer out a treaty that could force countries to evaluate, before making a sale, whether weapons will be used for human rights violations, terrorism or organized crime. UN leader Ban Ki-moon, along with a host of Nobel Peace Prize winners and pressure groups, is urging the United States and other key powers to make concessions and support the treaty. Brian Wood of Amnesty International says the first ever international Arms Trade Treaty would save countless lives.
