Madagascar's president to run for re-election

Issued on:

Madagascar strongman Andry Rajoelina has broken his pledge not to run for office. An official list published on Friday shows that President Rajoelina has registered to run in the country’s July election. Earlier this year, Rajoelina said he would not put his name forward. The man he ousted, Marc Ravalomanana, had made the same pledge. But an aide to president Rajoelina said the deal was broken when Ravalomanana’s wife said she would run. RFI spoke to Lydie Boka, a Madagascar specialist with the Paris-based risk consultancy group StrategieCo, about the situation.
