State of emergency declared in Nigeria

Issued on:

The Nigerian army says it has started deploying extra troops in the northeast of the country after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in three states worst hit by increasing violence. They are Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states. Boko Haram islamist militants have been blamed for most of the violence, which has left 2,000 people dead since 2010. President Jonathan's announcement comes as Nigeria Governors' Forum, which represents the leaders of the country's 36 states, warned against imposing emergency rule. RFI spoke to Abdullahi Bego, the spokesperson for the governor of Yobe state.
