He is said to be in “serious but stable” condition, but this will be his fourth hospital stay in seven months, and the third this year. Mandela, who turns 95 next month, was admitted to a hospital in Pretoria earlier this morning.

“The truth of the matter is a simple one. Madiba is a fighter and at his age as long as he is fighting, he’ll be fine” said Mac Maharaj, presidency spokesman.

Maharaj said the former president was suffering pneumonia, but told reporters “I am told by the doctors that he is breathing on his own, so I think that is a positive side”.

The Nobel peace prize laureate is revered around the world as a symbol of peace and forgiveness after leading South Africa as its first black president after decades of apartheid rule.

A new exhibit in Paris pays tribute to the life and contribution of Mandela. The multimedia show entitled “Nelson Mandela from prisoner to president” is currently on at the Paris City Hall.
