The Egyptian army yesterday launched an attack against militants in Sinai. The offensive in towns along the border with the Gaza Strip is believed to be the largest of its kind in recent years on the peninsula. Meanwhile, Egyptian soldiers yesterday discovered mortars and other explosives on a railway line near the Suez Canal. Violence has surged in Egypt since the revolution that ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak in early 2011, and has intensified since the military toppled elected president Mohamed Morsi in July. RFI spoke to Abdel Monem Said Aly, a Cairo expert about Sinai's security under each leader.
