Khartoum annoyed by push for October referendum on disputed Abyei

Ali Karti, Sudan's foreign minister, criticized Washington's presence in Khartoum this week, after Donald Booth, the US's newly appointed regional envoy, opened up discussions into the final status of Abyei. Abyei, a disputed territory straddling both Sudan and South Sudan, is one of the obstacles to peace between the two countries. Luka Biong Deng, one former member of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee, spoke about the latest push to hold a referendum in Abyei in October.
