The gendarme, in Mali as part of a French aid mission, was only lightly wounded and, according to TF1 television, chased the attacker and arrested him with the help of another,
unidentified, person, handing over the his Malian counterparts.
The assailant fired a shotgun as his victim drove out of the house where he was staying to go to work at 7.00am.
The gendarme was hit in the head and the shoulder but did not need to go to hospital.
Although RFI's Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon were killed in northern Mali this month and seven French soldiers have died there, the attack is the first on a French citizen in the capital since the French intervention against Islamists and Tuareg separatists in January.
Malian officials say they think the shooting did not have a political motive.
