Army master sergeant Samir Bajja, 38, was on board a Caracal helicopter when it crashed Saturday night during a “tactical training flight,” according to the ministry.

Two other members of the crew were seriously hurt in the accident.

The soldier that was killed had previously served in Côte d'Ivoire, in Afghanistan, in Chad and in Mali.

He’s the second French military to have been killed in Sahel since the anti-terrorist Barkhane operation was launched in the region on 1 August .
