Terrorist attack against UN base in Mali

Gunman launched an attack against UN troops, the Minusma, in Mali on Saturday, killing one soldier and injuring a second - the latest in a series of terrorist attacks on the blue helmets.

A camp housing UN troops in northern Mali was attacked by terrorists early in the morning, killing one Chadian soldier and injuring another, as told to AFP by a source within the UN forces.

The attack is the latest in a series of raids by suspected jihadists; the region fell to Islamist groups in 2012 before a French-led military intervention removed them.

The French movement has since been replaced by these UN forces.

In past months, a number of blue helmet soldiers in Mali have been killed or injured in ongoing attacks across the region.

Last Friday, jihadists attacked the city of Ténekou, killing two Malian soldiers and earlier in the month, at least 11 soldiers were killed in the neighbouring region of Nampala.

The Nampala attack was claimed by Al-Qaeda’s arm in the Maghreb.
