Mali attack suspect shot resisting arrest, police

Mali’s special forces have killed a suspect in the weekend’s attack on a Bamako restaurant, in which a French citizen was among the five people killed, Malian intelligence said on Friday. Investigators were still looking for about 10 “organised terrorists” suspected of involvement in the Bamako attack.

The man was tracked down in Magnabougou, a poor area of the Malian capital, but refused to surrender, security sources said.

He was killed in an exchange of fire.

Sources said that the man came from northern Mali, where French and UN forces are fighting Islamist insurgents, and had thrown a grenade at the La Terrasse restaurant after arriving at the scene on a motorcycle.

French national Fabien Guyomard, Belgian Ronny Piens and three Malains were killed in the assault.

French, Belgian and UN investigators are helping Malian police investigate and about 10 “veritable organised terrorists” have been identified, one of them reportedly a handicapped man with joint Malian-Russian nationality.

The eatery’s Lebanese owner has been given permission to clean up and reopen after it has been searched for clues.

“I have 25 employees so I have a lot of responsibility and charges to pay,” Wahib Assy told RFI. “So it’s best to reopen as soon as possible for economic reasons, obviously, and secondly for reasons of morale. Our employees also really want to get back to work.”
