Environment in Egypt series part 2/3

Issued on:

In a city of 20 million people and with air pollution almost 20 times the acceptable international standard, the Egyptian capital Cairo, craves green spaces. Despite a few parks dotted across this Middle Eastern concrete jungle, persistent urbanisation means that residents are now looking for new ways to find greenery. Roof gardens are growing in popularity among residents, with projects springing up to teach Cairo's residents how to cultivate plants and vegetables in a city plagued by heat, dust - and lots of concrete. Projects to teach the young and the old about growing their own food and respecting the environment are starting to take root.
