Explainer COP21: The basics

A crucial international event is due to take place at the end of the year in Paris. RFI will be covering the Climate Change Conference, known as COP21 and hosted by France from 30 November to 11 December 2015. In this section you will find several articles that provide essential information for getting to grips with a very big issue which affects the entire world, as well as climate change and environmental news and features. All agree that carbon emissions have to be cut to contain global warming at 2°C or less above pre-industrial levels, but the questions are how, when and who does what with what resources, and even, is it enough?

The COP21-UNFCC is a convenient and abridged acronym for an international conference and summit due to take place in Paris, France from 30 November to 11 December 2015. COP21 stands for the 21st Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The event is part of an ongoing process to have the 195 countries of the UN all do their share, within their own capacities, to help prevent climate change spiralling out of control.

The COP works on climate change which is induced by human behaviour. Climate change negotiations were first started in 1976, but the Rio talks in 1992   the Earth Summit, as this conference came to be known   established the UNFCCC.

As host, the French government has the responsibility to ensure the success of the COP21. Success will include adopting a new agreement on ways to limit global warming to 2°C (as compared to pre-industrial figures from the mid-18th century).

It’s up to France to help find ways to make differing views converge, both among the 28 member states of the European Union and among the members of the COP, which has been ratified by all UN member-states as well as Niue, Cook Islands and the EU. Some sources refer to the COP21 as Paris 2015.
