New movie theatre in Dakar creates controversy

Issued on:

Hollywood blockbusters are being screened again in Dakar after more than a decade. The capital city once boasted up to 80 cinemas and projection rooms but due to high running costs and little revenue they’ve all but closed. Four are struggling to keep going. Enter the new kid on the block: an upscale shopping centre on the corniche which started screening the latest movie-offerings on Christmas day, last year. You can catch Star Wars and James Bond, and this week the Sylvester Stallone film Creed will open to coincide with the release date in France. Dakar’s cultural scene has just scored big. But not everyone is enthusiastic.
