Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traoré talks to RFI about her latest album Né So in which she evokes the destiny of migrants, victims of the fallout of war. Written in Bamako, recorded and mixed in Brussels and Bristol, Traoré sings in English, French and most powerfully in her native Bambara.
As a goodwill ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency, Traoré visited refugee camps in Burkina Faso where she heard the stories of her fellow, displaced, Malians. That experience, and being forced to leave Bamako and return to France to ensure her son's education, had a huge impact on her. "I realised what it's like to no longer have a choice," she says.
