The United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) rates Nigeria as having one of the highest maternal and child mortality rate in the world. Figures show that 2,300 children aged less than five years old die daily in Nigeria. A quarter of these are new-born babies. A majority of them die within the first week of life.
Most times these deaths are caused by severe infections which result from lack of sterile materials. There is now an initiative aimed at bringing down these deaths. The initiative functions by making sterile materials available to pregnant women during childbirth. Sam Olukoya reports from Lagos.
