In Nigeria, Abuja airport closure disrupts travel

Issued on:

Airline passengers travelling to the Nigerian capital Abuja are in for difficult times. On 8 March, the city's airport was shut down for six weeks to enable repair work on the runway. While the airport is closed, planes will be diverted to Kaduna and passengers will then be transported to Abuja by bus on a two-and-a-half-hour journey. But the decision to divert flights to Kaduna has raised concerns about safety and security. Most international airlines have ruled out flying to Kaduna and so have cancelled all bookings to Abuja while the airport is closed. Sam Olukoya reports.
