New York police hunt white male, rule out Islamist link

New York police are looking for a white male in his 40s in connection with a bomb attempt on the city's Times Square. The man was seen near a vehicle containing bomb-making equipment. Police say they have several strong leads.

A Nissan Pathfinder utility vehicle was found on Saturday containing plastic cans filled with gasoline, firecrackers, propane tanks, alarm clocks, wires and a metal gun box holding a granular fertiliser.

City police chief Raymond Kelly said the equipment would have created a significant fireball if it had exploded.

The middle-aged man was seen nearby shedding a dark shirt to reveal a red one underneath. A tourist says he may have got a photograph of the suspect.

Authorities say they have ruled out a major Islamist link.

Kelly dismissed the claim by the Pakistani group Tehreek-e-Taliban that they were responsible for the attempt and New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said there is no evidence that the bomb had anything to do with Al-Qaeda or any other big terrorist organisation.

Michael Bloomberg treated the police officer who was first on the scene to dinner in Times Square as a reward.
