Reports say 30-year-old Shahzad lives in Conneticut and had recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan and the city of Peshawar. He was arrested late Monday morning as he attempted to board a plane to Dubai. He is due to appear later on Tuesday to face formal charges which have not yet been specified.

Attorney General, Eric Holder, said the authorities were conducting a wide-ranging probe and were seeking information on overseas terrorist groups. He said it was clear from the attempted attack that "the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans".

Earlier in the day, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that more than one person may have been involved in the plot, but he gave no further details.

So far the only group to claim resonsibility for the failed bombing is the Pakistani militant group Tehreek-e-Talibani.
