Hurricane Paula moved away from Mexico’s Yucantan Peninsula on Wednesday spinning towards Cuba where it could make landfall later in the week. The Category 2 hurricane sparred tourists on Mexico’s Caribbean coast but left many areas drenched in rain.

At 08:00 local time (12:00 UT) the hurricane was located around 90 kilometres east of Cancun and 115 kilometres from the western tip of Cuba, according to the US National Hurricane Center.
There were no reports of injuries or significant damage in or around Cancun. It was thought the evacuation of some 27,000 tourists in the area was not necessary.
“Airports are operating normally,” Felix Gonzalez, the state governor, told a news conference.
Weather services forecast heavy rain for Cuba in the west of the island for Wednesday.
Paula, which sustained winds of around 160 kilometres per hour, was the ninth hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season.
