Nepal army denies responsibility for Haiti cholera

The Nepalese army has condemned a report made by a French epidemiologist linking its UN peacekeepers in Haiti to a cholera epidemic that has claimed the lives of more than 2,000.

"We strongly condemn the making of such allegations with no firm evidence or facts," said Nepali Army spokesperson Ramindra Chhetri in Kathmandu, Nepal. "I don't think that we have seen any concrete evidence so far."

The UN has also insisted that there is no link from the peacekeepers to the outbreak, a statement that was fuelled by rumours in Haiti.

The French Foreign Ministry said it had received a copy of the report and had passed it on to the UN.

The UN head of mission in Haiti, Edmond Mulet, said last month that no peacekeepers had tested positive for cholera. Samples had been taken from latrines, kitchens and the water supply of the Nepali camp and they had turned up negative as well.

Cholera, a food and water-borne disease, has gripped the earthquake-stricken country since mid-October. It is normally passed from person-to-person through fecal contamination.
