Former death row inmate campaigns against death penalty

Issued on:

Japan has executed three convicted murderers, in its first executions since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's new government won power in December. A child killer and two other convicted murderers were hanged early on Thursday. The Japanese government justified the executions, saying the three had committed extremely cruel crimes. There has been extensive debate over the pros and cons of the death penalty in Japan, where the number of death-row inmates stands at 134. Joaquin Jose Martinez was a former death row inmate in Florida in the United States, he now campaigns against the death penalty, and told RFI why he opposes it.
