A new radio telescope is now fully operational in the high desert of the Chilean Andes, 5,000 metres above sea level. The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (Alma) is, in fact, a set of 66 interconnected radio telescopes. It cost 1.2 billion euros and took a decade to build and was put into operation Wednesday. John Richer, an astrophysicist and one of the project's managers, says that Alma will allow scientists to look deeper into space than ever before.
