Ecuador considers giving political asylum to whitleblower Snowden

Issued on:

Ecuador has waived preferential rights granted under a trade agreement with the United States in response to pressure from Washington over US whistleblower, Edward Snowden's political asylum application. Ecuador is considering granting political asylum status to the fugitive former NSA contractor, who is accused of leaking information on America's secret cyber surveillance programs. Snowden is currently in an airport in Moscow. Initially, observers said the announcement made by Ecuador's President Rafael Correa, to renounce the US trade deal, was a show of defiance. RFI spoke to Bill Hamilton, a former representative of the Correa administration, about the trade deal and the president's continuing protests against Washington.
