Turkey sets up own Gaza flotilla enquiry

media State-backed Israeli inquiry into the Israeli raid on the aid flotilla Reuters

Turkey has set up a commission to investigate the Israeli attack on Gaza-bound aid ships in May that left nine Turks dead, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday. The commission will be under the direction of the prime minister's office, and a report will be issued once the investigation is concluded, but no final date has been announced.

Israeli commandos attacked six ships bound for Gaza to deliver aid. The international incident sparked worldwide controversy and strained relations between Turkey and Israel.

Israel has set up two investigations into the raid, but the Turkish government doubts their impartiality.

The UN has also set up an inquiry, which Turkey says it will expose the truth as to what happened on 31 May. Israel has threatened to pull out of the UN probe if the commission wants to interrogate Israeli soldiers.

Israel has already asserted that the commandos fired on the humanitarian aid flotilla in self-defence while the activists on the boats say that the soldiers fired as soon as they boarded the boats.
