Five election workers found dead in weekend of violence

Afghan police found the bodies of five men campaigning for a woman candidate in the country’s 18 September general election near Heart on Sunday. Earlier, a male candidate was killed in the province, while four female aid workers were abducted in the north of the country Saturday.

The bodies of the five men, who had been working for candidate Fawzya Galani's campaign, were found in a mountainous area in the western province’s Adraskan district.

They were among ten election workers abducted by the Taliban last week. Police do not know the whereabouts of the other five.

On Saturday another candidate, Abdul Manan, was shot dead in Herat. The Taliban have been blamed for the deaths of two other candidates in next month’s poll.

The weekend has seen a number of other violent incidents, according to reports by local officials and international forces:

  • Four women working for a local NGO treating drug addicts were snatched by unknown gunmen in the northern Frayab province on Saturday;
  • Eight Afghan civilians were killed and 15 wounded in several attacks, including a suicide bombing;
  • Seven US soldiers were killed in four separate incidents;
  • Fifteen insurgents were killed in fighting in Paktia province.
