Hospital officials confirmed the casualties and police said the attack was caused by an improvised-explosive device (IED), not a suicide bomber.

About 3,740 people have been killed in suicide attacks and bomb explosions, since government troops stormed a radical mosque in Islamabad three years ago.

After a lull following this year’s floods, violence may be on the rise again, with election-related attacks in Karachi this week and three fatal attacks on paramilitary troops patrolling the tribal belt this week.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will lead a third and final day of a "strategic dialogue" with Pakistan on Friday, in a show of support for the government following this year's criticism of its role in the Afghan conflict.
