The Nato military alliance claims to have killed eight Taliban fighters when they attacked Jalalabad airport – one of the biggest military bases in the country - before dawn Saturday.

The Taliban say that 14 suicide bombers were involved in the attack. Nato says only one of the attackers was wearing a suicide vest and that no foreign or Afghan troops were injured.

The Taliban attacked Jalalabad airbase, which is home to 2,500 military and civilian personnel, in June.

A few hours later six civilians and two police officers were killed and 18 injured when a motorcycle packed with explosives went off on a market in the remote Imam Sahed district of Kunduz province.

A pro-government militia commander was among the dead, local officials say. They believe he was probably the target.

An attempted suicide attack in Kabul on Friday failed to claim any victims.

International troops said on Saturday that they captured a senior Taliban commander and several other suspected fighters when they discovered a weapons cache in the southern province of Helmand.
