Six dead in Pakistan suicide attack
Six people were killed and 10 wounded when a suicide bomber riding on a motorbike blew himself up near a police checkpoint in north-west Pakistan on Wednesday, police said. A hard-line religious party believes that its leader was the target.
Issued on:
The checkpoint was close to a camp set up by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), a hardline
religious party, for a public meeting in the town, located about 100 kilometres east of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhawa province, which is frequently the scene of bombings and other violence.
One police officer was among the dead.
JUI leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman was on his way to the meeting, which was cancelled.
"He is safe and the meeting has been cancelled," JUI spokesperson Jalil Jan said. "We can't immediately identify the attackers. We don't know who is involved. But we can say the target appears to be the JUI leadership.”
