Police looking for the masterminds behind the Bali bombings picked up the two French men in Lahore about ten weeks ago, according to intelligence officials.

Known by their first names Zaib and Sharaf, they are are aged between 19 and 22 years old. Both are from the Paris region. One is of Moroccan origin, the other’s family comes from Pakistan.

They are suspected of being part of the Al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah group that is responsible for the attacks on a Bali nightclub in 2002 which killed 202 people.

Police were looking for a man suspected of being the mastermind behind the attacks, Indonesian Umar Patek – who was himself arrested recently in Pakistan.

The French embassy in Pakistan says the two French men are unlikely to be tied to the bombings, as they would have been too young at the time. Embassy officials are waiting to have access to the two men.
